The First Great Journey is an adventure about four birds who learn to work together despite their differences. The story shows children that they can find a solution to their quarrel together, once they understand each other’s perspective.

Together with the rest of the flock, the birds embark on their first great journey, but it’s not easy because they get into an argument along the way. Each of them deals with tension and conflict in their own way. By listening to each other, they gain understanding for one another and learn to work together, so that they can complete the journey successfully.

At the back of the book, there are reflection questions for children and explanations for parents, teachers, or other educators. The characters of the four birds are based on four behavioral styles in conflict: competitive, accommodating, avoidant, and joint problem-solving. The bird Rookoo mediates between her brothers and sister, showing the (peer) meditation method of helping others to listen to each other and find a solution together.

You can download this Teacher’s Guide below for free! It explains more about how you can work with the book and apply peer mediation techniques in your class room. It includes two coloring pages as well! Moreover, schools in Europe can invite the author as an expert to their school, via the Erasmus+ program, as explained in the second document.

De Eerste Grote Reis is een avontuur van vier vogeltjes die leren samenwerken ondanks hun verschillen. Ze gaan ieder op een andere manier om met spanningen en conflict. Samen met de rest van de zwerm maken ze hun eerste grote reis, maar dat is niet gemakkelijk, want onderweg krijgen ze ruzie.

Door naar elkaar te luisteren krijgen ze begrip voor elkaar en leren ze samenwerken zodat ze de reis tot een goed einde kunnen brengen. Het verhaal laat kinderen zien dat ze samen een oplossing kunnen vinden voor hun ruzie, nadat ze elkaars invalshoek begrijpen.

Achter in het boek staan er reflectievragen voor kinderen en wordt ook nog het een en ander uitgelegd voor ouders, leerkrachten of andere opvoeders. De karakters van vier vogeltjes zijn gebaseerd op vier gedragsstijlen in conflict: confronterend/aanvallend, inschikkelijk/aanpassend, vermijdend en samen probleemoplossend. De bemiddeling van vogel Roekoe tussen haar broers en zus is gebaseerd op de peer meditation methode, waarbij een leeftijdsgenoot anderen helpt naar elkaar te luisteren en samen een oplossing te zoeken.
